FIRSTS FRIDAY: A guide for first time investors. With a photo of a woman with cash and some graphs.

Investing throughout your life is key for securing a prosperous retirement and healthy financial future for you and your family. But if you’re a beginner, it’s hard to know where to start!

You don’t need a deep knowledge of the stock market, annuities or mutual funds to invest. Here are a few things to think about as you begin your investment journey:

  • Make a plan that fits your needs. Every person’s financial situation is unique, and your investment plan should be tailored to fit your specific goals. Before you jump in, do some research and think about what investment options might be right for you – don’t just copy the same plan as a friend or someone online.

  • Just invest what you can. You don’t have to make hundreds of dollars of contributions to your investment accounts every month. Just start by doing what you can and adjust along the way!

TIP: If your employer offers matching 401(k) contributions, it’s good practice to at least invest enough to take full advantage of the match.

  • A truly comfortable retirement requires more than a 401(k). Participating in your employer-sponsored 401(k) is certainly an essential part of every retirement plan. But you can also invest in other retirement accounts, like a traditional or Roth IRA.

Make sure you explore all the options available to create an informed, proactive plan for a comfortable retirement.

  • Diversify to protect your money long-term. A diverse investment portfolio can help protect you from potential profit losses down the road! When you develop your investment strategy, make sure not to put all your eggs in one basket.

  • Be patient! The stock market is ever-changing, and there will be ups and downs throughout our lives – which can be nerve-racking. But the earlier you start investing, the longer you have to ride those waves and ensure your money grows. Sit back, relax and watch your investments do their job!

  • Questions? Talk to an expert. You don’t have to figure it all out on your own! Talk to an investment adviser to help develop a plan that’s right for you.
