Stay Cool on a Budget

This summer is officially heating up! That may be great for a nice pool day, but it’s not so fun when you inadvertently wrack up a huge electricity bill trying to cool down your house.

Try a few of these tips to keep yourself and your home cool and comfortable without a huge spike in your energy costs:

  1. Close your window blinds during the day to keep out the warm sun rays.
  2. Don’t use your oven to cook dinner – it will warm up the room. Fire up the grill outside or pull out the air fryer instead!
  3. Use a fan to cool down your rooms at a fraction of the energy cost it would take to run the air conditioner.
  4. Wear the right clothes with loose-fitting, breathable materials.
  5. Hydrate! Drink plenty of water before you spend time outside.
  6. Eat cold or frozen foods like popsicles or even ice.
  7. Enjoy the swimming pool or other nearby body of water.
  8. Refrigerate things like lotion, aloe, or face creams for cooling relief when you apply.
  9. Avoid the hottest times of day. Schedule yard work or outside activities for early in the morning or later in the evening.
  10. Borrow air conditioning from the mall, the library, or the movie theater for a few hours.
