Security Tip: Just Hang Up

August 5, 2026

If you receive a call from someone asking you for personal information like your:

  • bank account numbers
  • secure access codes
  • Social Security number
  • debit or credit card numbers
  • or passwords

our rule of thumb is simple… JUST HANG UP! The caller is probably a fraudster or identity theft, trying to use your information to:

  • Open credit cards or other lines of credit in your name
  • Use your credit and debit cards to make purchases
  • Withdraw your cash
  • File a tax return using your SSN and intercept your refund
  • Use your health insurance
  • And more

We know that avoiding scams is easier said than done. Fraudsters are expert tricksters. They’ll impersonate government agencies or businesses, bank employees, online romantic interests or even members of your family to get you to hand over your information.

But remember: no legitimate organizations or businesses will ever reach out via unsolicited email or call to ask for personal or financial information.

That’s why we recommend that you NEVER give your personal information to an unknown entity over the phone or through the internet. Don’t answer, don’t click!

If you have questions about whether a call is legitimate, HANG UP and call back at a published number. Never call back at the number the person called you from.
