Using an ATM to withdraw cash is easy and convenient. But if you’re not careful, it can also put you at risk for debit card fraud or theft.

Practice these tips every time you get cash to keep yourself and your information safe:

  • Cover the ATM keypad when you enter your PIN. Criminals often try to steal your PIN using small cameras attached to the ATM. Cover the keypad to keep your PIN out of view and your information safe.

  • Keep an eye on your account statements after using an ATM. You should regularly check your account statements for suspicious activity – but especially after using an ATM. If you see fraudulent activity, report it to your bank immediately.

  • When using a drive-up ATM, keep your passenger windows rolled up and your car locked. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If you see any suspicious characters, leave immediately and use a different machine.
  • Don’t leave your ATM card lying around. Always keep your card safe in your wallet or purse, hidden from sight.

  • Don’t count or display your money after withdrawing it from at ATM. Counting your cash is a good way to attract the eyes of criminals who might try to take it. Instead, put the money in your pocket right away and count it later.

  • Don’t write down our share your ATM PIN with anyone. As a general rule, we recommend that you never give out any personal financial information over the phone or through the internet.
